IT Jobs in High Demand in South Florida

Release Date: Feb 28, 2012

While many people are having difficulty finding a job in today’s bleak economy, one industry that is booming is Information Technology.  One recent report states that there are “more than enough positions to fill, and many of them are lucrative and rewarding.”  (. “What IT takes: Jobs in Information Technology.” Chicago Tribune 30 January 2012).

In South Florida, college administrators listed information security, mobile application development, and health information technology among the top five hottest career programs in South Florida.  According to the Florida Workforce Agency, the projected employment in these three IT-focused positions are expected to rise 22, 32, and 16 percent, respectively,  by the year 2018 in both Broward and Palm Beach counties (Ordoñez, S. Five hot career programs to make you more employable in South Florida.” Sun Sentinel 28 August 2011).

Given the increase in demand in these areas, recruiters are reporting difficulty finding highly skilled IT professionals in South Florida who qualify for high-paying IT positions.   According to Julie Garofalo, human resources manager at Champion Solutions Group, an IT infrastructure consulting firm based in Boca Raton, “the firm has had an opening since March for a ‘data management consultant’ – [a job that] requires skills in information storage, virtual technology, and specialized IT areas, plus the right personality to be a consultant.”  She states, "We've had less than 10 people apply. It probably has expired on the job boards." (Pounds, M. Highly skilled workers hard to find, South Florida recruiters say.”  Sun Sentinel 17 July 2011).
