EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Emergencies, disasters and crises are inevitable. Preparation, response, recovery and mitigation with competently delivered care during and after an event ensure greater resiliency for agencies, facilities, employees, and communities. FAU's International Center for Emergency Management Education(ICEME) delivers unique, hands-on, experiential training with practical application for regional professionals working in emergency management, public safety, public health, first response, emergency medicine, crisis and disaster management.

FAU’s International Center for Emergency Management Education is a partner with a major international hospital, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, in Israel, offering global expertise in emergency management training. The ICEME is also a point of delivery for FEMA certified courses, as a partner with the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center in Hawaii. The ICEME also collaborates with the International Center for Trauma and Resilience (ICTR) to deliver Mental Health for Trauma and Resilience training, fully online.

With every emergency or crisis, a multitude of psychological impacts emerge across all demographics for both the public sector and first responder communities. In partnership with the International Collaboration on Trauma and Resilience (ICTR), FAU offers a fully online Mental Health for Trauma and Resilience training program, taught by traumatology and resilience experts.

The six-module format delves into the dynamics and neurobiology of trauma and resilience, and the holistic approach; psychological first aid and trauma; pre-, during, and post-crisis resiliency training; spiritual resiliency, and humor first aid; innovative approaches to emotional care and coping; and the “Formation of Band of Brothers/Band of Sisters” for creating and maintaining community resilience and support groups.

Testimonial: “This is exactly what I need to manage my own exposure to trauma in the field, day after day. I will be able to help myself and my team perform better and feel better. We need this for everyone in law enforcement!”

Public Safety Leadership Development

ICD-10

Extraordinary challenges require extraordinary leaders. South Florida’s public safety leaders face intense pressure, requiring innovative thinking, intuitive collaboration and exceptional communication. FAU’s Public Safety Leadership Development Certificate program explores issues and provides relevant insights for today’s leaders in public safety. Professionals in law enforcement, fire rescue, 911 telecommunications, emergency management, and support services can choose one of two tracks. Track One, for new supervisors, introduces you to an understanding of your own leadership, communications, and management styles, and covers managing conflict, working across multi-generational teams, delegating, and time management. Track Two, for established leaders—lieutenants, captains, commanders, and director level personnel—dives into strategic planning, leading through change, getting buy in, team communication and engagement, and creating a Leader-Leader culture.

The Public Safety Leadership Development Certificate Program constists of two tracks: Track One for newer supervisors and Track Two for experienced managers. Each track is a 4-day course designed for the next generation of South Florida public safety leaders including Police Officers, Firefighters, Paramedics, Corrections Officers and Telecommunications Dispatch. Participants will develop crucial leadership skills and behaviors that will enhance their own careers, their agencies, and the communities they serve.
