Kenan Evren Chair in Turkish Studies

The Kenan Evren Chair in Turkish Business Studies at Florida Atlantic University has been established in the Barry Kaye College of Business. With generous support from the government of the Republic of Turkey, initial private funding for this Chair was obtained through the tireless efforts of Mrs. Suheyla Gencsoy, FAU Foundation Board member and president of the Fort Lauderdale-based Turkish American Business, Education, and Cultural Development Committee (TABEC). This Chair, valued at $1 million with state matching gifts, will help link FAU to one of the fastest growing super-economies in Mediterranean Southern Europe. Gencsoy, speaking on behalf of her organization says, “We are very impressed by the university’s vision for global education and we feel this important initiative will greatly benefit FAU students and academicians.” When the Chair was first established, Florida Governor Jeb Bush wrote, “As one of America ’s closest allies, Turkey echoes our values of democracy, economic freedom, and our belief in the separation between church and state.

The Kenan Evren Chair will promote cooperation between Florida and Turkish businesses, enhancing development in both regions and building solid friendships through mutually beneficial trade exchanges and investments.” Sharing parallel economic climates, both Turkey and South Florida are strategically positioned for world trade and rapid development in the field of information technology. The Kenan Evren Chair, to be filled on a rotating basis, will serve the College of Business and its department of management, entrepreneurship, and international business by introducing students to Turkey , its history and culture, and its vital role in the modern world. The distinguished Chair holder will engage in programs and activities that focus on international economic and business practices, particularly as they apply to the business communities of South Florida and Turkey.

“This important collaboration will provide faculty with stimulating research opportunities and students with invaluable academic experiences,” says J. Dennis Coates, Professor of accounting in the College of Business.
