Weekly Punter Stats - 2023

Week 13 (November 20-25)

The Boom Rating is a performance measure on a scale of 0.00 to 1.00.  Multiple factors are included in the Boom Rating such as net yards per kick, line of scrimmage, and proximity to each end zone, etc.  All FBS game punts were factored into this score.  See our methodology.

Notes:
1)  To be considered for the weekly Best Punter Award, a player must have a minimum of 3 punts.
2)  888 = had fewer than 3 punts in Week 13 --- USED FOR WEEKLY RANKING
3)  999 = has fewer than 30 punts all season --- USED FOR SEASON RANKING
4)  Boom Rating is rounded to three decimal places.  When players have the same Boom Rating, but different Rank, it means their Boom Rating is different beyond 3 decimal places.

Note about the Weekly Rating and Rank:
The Boom Rating is an effective tool to evaluate punters over the course of a season. However, on a weekly basis, the Boom Rating may lack nuance for the very top and bottom performers due to the small sample size each week. The issue is that achieving 3 great punts is a lot easier than achieving, say, 8 great punts. Since the Boom Rating is based on percentages, it's easier to be perfect over 3 punts, compared to 8 punts. To remedy this, we created formulas that allow for a direct comparison between punters with different number of punts in a given week. Each "number of punts" has an ideal standard. Think of it as an optimal score for that number of punts.

To determine who has the top punter performance in a given week, we will run our formula for players with a weekly Boom Rating of .600 or higher. In this select group only, players with a lower weekly Boom Rating can be ranked above a player with a higher weekly Boom Rating because our formulas recognize the difficulty of earning a high Boom Rating with a large number of punts.

We chose not to list another column that shows the results of these calculations as it would clutter the page. Instead, we posted this note to inform viewers.

Note about the Season Rating and Rank:
Early in the season, when players have a small sample size of punts (between 0-15 punts), a special scaled formula is used in rating punts. (see explanation for the weekly formula listed above). This will likely only affect the Season Ratings and Rank up to Week 3. When players have a sample size of 15+ punts, the Season Rating and Rank will be based on the regular Boom Rating formula.

All columns are sortable by clicking on the header titles.
