FAU Jaffe Kicker & Punter Indexes
Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) College of Business sponsors the FAU Jaffe Kicker and Punter Indexes. Associated with FAU’s MBA in Sport Management and the College’s Business Analytics offerings, these innovative rating systems provide additional, unique ways for the College to meaningfully engage the public. Millions enjoy football, and we want to help enhance their engagement with the game by providing more comprehensive attention to positions that are often overlooked.
These indexes evaluate kickers and punters of Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. The indexes will appraise each active kicker and punter with weekly and cumulative rankings as well as provide additional insights on individual players.
The indexes use the principles of business analytics applied to sport to gauge performance. Typically these special teams positions are judged by simplified metrics, punters by the average distance of their kicks and kickers by the distance and accuracy of their field goals. The FAU Jaffe Indexes utilize these concepts in their algorithms, but in more refined ways, while also combining the common measures with several additional performance indicators.
The indexes are updated every Thursday throughout the NCAA football season. Cumulative index rankings, including post-season games, will be published January 8, 2019, following the national championship. The indexes can also be found on Twitter at @FAUkickerpunter.
What's Behind our Numbers?, an article that explains details about our methodologies of both ranking models, is available.
