A distinguished scholar and alumnus from Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business released a book with Oprah Winfrey on the secret to building a happier life.

“Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier,” written by Oprah Winfrey and Arthur C. Brooks, Ph.D., social scientist, guides the reader on a path towards happiness by using science and emotional management skills to teach them how to improve their lives, no matter what the circumstances are.

“It’s easy to say this book is about how to be happy. But in truth, happiness is a direction, not a destination. The goal of this book is progress, no matter where anyone starts out. As Oprah likes to put it, the goal of the book is happier-ness,” Brooks said in a statement.

The book was released in September.

Brooks is a social scientist, speaker and Harvard professor who graduated from FAU’s College of Business in 1994 with a master’s in economics. He led the American Enterprise Institute for ten years. A distinguished alumnus of the College of Business, Brooks was inducted into the Florida Atlantic University Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame for his career accomplishments, speaking during the 2019 graduation ceremony.

"Dr. Arthur Brooks is a scholar and distinguished alumnus of FAU economics whose work I have admired for years. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are values deeply rooted in the American sensibility, and his latest book with Oprah Winfrey ties together years of academic research with practical lessons to help people build better and happier lives,” said Daniel Gropper, Ph.D., dean of FAU’s College of Business.
