AMA Leadership Retreat - Scholarship

Senior marketing student David S. Rojas earned a scholarship to represent Florida Atlantic University during a leadership retreat initiative of the American Marketing Association (AMA) held at the Gies College of Business on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.

The four-day event, organized by, brought together 20 students from various universities across the nation, including the University of North Texas, San Diego State University, North Carolina State University, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Trinity University, University of Puerto Rico, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Cornell University, University of South Florida, Florida State University, and Wright State University.

During the retreat, participants engaged with seasoned marketing professionals. These included a notable president of a marketing consultancy firm, researchers specializing in consumer behavior and professors of marketing along with AMA directors. These professionals shared invaluable insights into the marketing industry and strategies for students to enhance their professional growth.

Students were divided into four groups, each tasked with brainstorming and devising innovative marketing strategies. The culmination of their efforts was presented through PowerPoint presentations at the end of the retreat. This collaborative experience not only fostered teamwork but also provided a platform for the exchange of diverse ideas and perspectives.

“This experience was life-changing, allowing me to connect with remarkable and unique individuals whom I am sure I will keep in contact with in the future. We discussed essential topics such as mental health, the keys to negotiation, self-empowerment, and, most importantly, understanding who we are.”

Retreats like these have a lasting impact on a student's career and personal growth, and the knowledge and relationships gained are invaluable. Earning opportunities to attend these kinds of American Marketing Association events and conferences is just one of the benefits of being an active member of AMA.
