Why Cyber Security and Information Assurance?
- The Internet has made a tremendous impact on society. Computer and communication networks transmit most of the country's financial, transportation, energy, emergency, and water systems data.
- The security and assurance of our information and communications infrastructure is a national priority.
- Companies face the emerging trend of information warfare and cyber terrorism. They tackle thousands of cyber-attacks on a daily basis. and protecting critical infrastructure, systems and data become strategically important for the survival of companies and institutions.
- As digital information moves to a more networked and globalized infrastructure, it is essential that managers understand the threats to this information. The creation of effective corporate-wide security plans with well established security programs, policies, controls, and procedures as well as awareness and training initiatives is vital.
- More and more companies across a variety of industries, such as banking, finance, and healthcare, need to keep rigorous standards and certifications in cyber security to maintain business operations. They need Managers that ensure the creation, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive programs.
Open to students who satisfy the prerequisites required for each course in the program with a minimum grade of "C." Each track in the program requires 12 credits with minimum grades of "C" in all courses. Students cannot obtain both a certificate and a minor. All course materials are in English. All international students must demonstrate proficiency in English to enter the program.
The certificate is available to degree-seeking students, non-degree students and working professionals. Students pursuing the certificate may apply for it in the college where the track is located upon successful completion of the coursework.
The program consists of four undergraduate courses (12 credit hours). The tuition for the program is calculated based on the number of credits taken. Current tuition rates can be found on the FAU Controller’s site or in the FAU Catalog.
How to Apply?
There is no formal application or admission for the certificate program. If you are not currently an FAU student, you must first register as non-degree seeking student to obtain a Z number, and then register for the courses. Click here to register as a non-degree seeking student.
Contact the College of Business Advising Office if you have restrictions in the system when registering for classes. We must ensure that you have sufficient knowledge to waive any prerequisite requirements (see Program Information for more details).
Upon completion of all the requirements (minimum grades of "C" required in all courses taken), you will be awarded the certificate.
We offer courses in the program each Fall and Spring semester, so the length of the program depends on how many classes you want to enroll in.
All courses are scheduled in Boca Raton campus. Sometimes courses may be scheduled online or on the Davie campus, but it cannot be guaranteed.

Cybersecurity is the study of methods to ensure information and system security. Industry and government need an educated workforce to serve as information and systems security analysts, security and network administrators and more.
Due their extensive expertise and facilities, the departments of Information Technology and Operations Management (in the College of Business), Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (In the College of Engineering and Computer Science) and Mathematical Sciences (in the College of Science) have jointly designed the Cybersecurity Minor and Certificate.
Three tracks, each requiring 12 credits, constitute the minor and certificate:
- Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS) and Mathematical Sciences (MS).

IT Cybersecurity Track:
The 12 credits should be completed as follows:
- (1) IT Core Course and all (3) IT Elective Courses or (1) IT Core Course, (2) IT Elective Courses, & (1) Other Cybersecurity Track Elective
- A maximum of 3 credits used for the minor may count toward other major requirements. A minimum of two courses (6 credits) must be exclusive to the minor.

The following four courses comprise the IT Cyber Security track minor or certificate. Three of the courses are specific to Cyber Security concepts and tools, and the fourth course covers networking concepts. Please read the descriptions of each course below for more information.
ISM 4320 - Introduction to Cybersecurity
- This course offers a balance of the managerial and technical aspects of information security. A comprehensive overview is offered of security issues related to operating systems, databases, networks, physical and infrastructural security, and cryptography.
ISM 4323 - Management of Information Assurance and Security
- This course emphasizes information security policy development, security management planning, risk assessment and risk management, disaster recovery and business continuity, and personnel issues related to security management.
ISM 4324 - Computer Forensics
- This course introduces basic computer forensics tools, and then emphasizes digital evidence controls, data acquisition, computer forensic analysis, file recovery, and network and email forensics.
ISM 4220 - Business Data Communications
- Prerequisite: ISM 2000
- This course introduces students to the fundamentals of communication technology including wide-area networks and organizational impacts of communication-based innovations.
