Overview of Program Information

  • Students who choose to major in Management Information Systems (MIS) from the FAU College of Business will earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (B.B.A.) or Science (B.S.)
  • The MIS major consists of a total of 18 credits (6 courses)
  • Students who major in MIS must choose (1) of the MIS Paths below:
    • Information Technology Path
    • Information Knowledge Path
  • Students who major in MIS also have the option to choose one of the (2) MIS Concentrations

STEM Waiver Program

  • In 2021, the Florida legislature implemented the Select STEM Waiver program. The waiver program covers 100% of tuition and certain fees for 50% of a student’s enrollment in degree applicable upper-division courses for specific programs of strategic emphasis during the Fall and Spring semesters.  To be eligible for the waiver, a student must:
    • Be a Florida resident for tuition purposes
    • Have earned at least 60 credits towards a baccalaureate degree within two years after initial enrollment at a Florida public post-secondary institution;
    • Be enrolled in one of eight programs of strategic emphasis as determined by the Florida Board of Governors (BOG).
  • Students should contact their academic advisor for further questions on their eligibility
  • The Stem waiver should be automatically applied but if it is not, a student can fill out a appeal form if they believe they qualify

Degree Requirements

  • Management Information Systems (MIS) is a major in the FAU College of Business.
  • By choosing this major, you will earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (B.B.A.) or Science (B.S.).
  • Please refer to the degree requirements for a B.B.A. or B.S. to learn more about the core requirements for all College of Business undergraduate students.
  • You may also speak to an undergraduate advisor in the College of Business to learn more.

Major Requirements

  • In addition to the foundation and core courses required for all undergraduate College of Business students, all Management Information Systems (MIS) majors must complete a total of 18 credits (6 courses) from courses offered by the Information Technology and Operations Management Department.
  • A grade of "C" or better is required in all major courses.
  • All students majoring in MIS must take Advanced Systems Analysis and Design (ISM 4133) as part of the 18 credits (6 classes) for the major.
  • Depending which other courses interest you or which career path you wish to pursue, you will follow one of two paths (both paths require the same amount of courses): 
    • Information Technology Path

      • This is the classic MIS path that provides core technical skills needed to manage and design Information Technology in organizations. Students acquire the Basic Four technical skills: application development and programming languages, database management, data communications, and system analysis and design.     • Information and Knowledge Management Path

      • This path provides students with general, broad knowledge in information and knowledge management in organizations, digital products and service development, social media analysis as well as project management. Graduates will have the skills to analyze and lead technology-enabled products and services and consult organizations on digital products and services. Concentrations for MIS Majors

  • In addition to choosing one of the required paths (Information Technology Path or Information & Knowledge Path), students are able to choose one of our two optional Concentrations:
    • Business Analytics
      • Business Analytics involves information technologies, applications, and practices for collection, integration, analysis, and presentation of business data and information. Business Analytics allows managers to extract information from the data to make decisions regarding operations, sales and marketing, and research and development of products and services.     • Cybersecurity
      • Cybersecurity involves the practice of protecting a business' devices, systems, networks, and data from attackers with malicious intent. Cybersecurity provides organizations with the digital protection they need to conduct their everyday business with confidence. Program Delivery Method

  • Students can complete this program as a Full-time student (12 or more credit hours) or part-time student (Less than 12 credit hours)
  • Courses are primarily offered over a 16-week period in the Fall and Spring semesters.
    • A limited number of courses are offered in the Summer semester over a 12-week or 6-week period; we do not offer 8-week courses in the Fall and Spring at this time.
  • The courses in the program are offered in a mix of formats including traditional face to face, fully-online distance learning, and even hybrid flex course.
    • Most of the traditional face to face and hybrid courses are offered in the evenings while some courses are also offered during the day offered in the evenings while traditional face to face Computer Science courses are usually offered during the day.

Combined MIS to MSITM Program

    • Our combined MIS to MSITM program allows students to earn both the B.B.A./B.S. and Masters of Science in Information Technology Management (MSITM) degrees in as little as five years.
